By the time Donna Cherry reached her husband, he lay bleeding in the parking lot of a strip mall in Abington and no longer recognized his wife of more than two decades, she said.

Fire officials said previously that when the fire broke out at the 2249 Washington St. home about 4 p.m. Monday, a homeowner phoned a family member, instead of calling 911 first.

Decades of wind, rain and snow have weathered the gray gravestone in the southeast corner of West Bridgewater’s Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Its inscription says little: “Lillie McGuire, 14 yrs.”

Mystery shrouds the story of Lillie McGuire, the escaped slave buried in that plot some 150 years ago. But what little is known about her has endured in West Bridgewater, where she has become a figure of local fascination and folklore.
